How to Introduce Meditation into the Workplace

For many of us, we spend more of our time on our jobs than on other activities. And the workplace is usually a major source of mental health issues due to tight deadlines, challenging colleagues and other factors. We all are aware of the potent effects of non-secular activities, such as meditation or yoga, on our health. Hence, it would be beneficial for an organization to incorporate more mindfulness activities into its culture to support the health of its employees. We may ask ourselves how we introduce meditation into the corporate culture. Here are several ways to do this:
- Be a role model: When we are operating at a conscious level, our colleagues will notice it and eventually want to adopt it. If we are assigned a task, we give them our full attention without any multi-tasking and bring our mind back if it wanders to other thoughts. Cultivate a growth and grateful mindset that inspires others to be better people.
- Host a mindfulness session or start a meditation group: We can invite a meditation specialist during a 'lunch or learn' session or we can demonstrate quick mindful exercises, such as focusing on our breathing, by creating a meditation group. This will allow our colleagues to ask questions about meditation and gain a deeper understanding of it.
- Create a job role related to meditation: We can raise a request to the right team member about developing a new mindfulness role within the organization. This role will emphasize how meditation is essential in the everyday work culture.
- Share resources with coworkers: There are multiple resources such as articles or videos that provide a great introduction to meditation and show how to do it effectively. As well, the colleagues can learn how to become mindful teammates, which is vital for the success of the organization.
Keep in mind that an organization will not adopt meditation overnight - it is a gradual process as it requires time and effort. However, we should try our best to continuously discuss the importance of meditation in the workplace so that it becomes more prominent everywhere.
