Simple Mindful Activities for Everyone
Practicing mindful activities augments your quality of life in multiple ways. These activities engage your senses, thus bringing you into the present moment and more attuned to your surroundings.
Here are several fun and simple activities that you can do to increase your mindful being.
SAFARI WALK
The Safari exercise is a great way to learn mindfulness. This activity turns the everyday walk into an exciting new adventure.
- Pretend that you will be going on a safari and that your goal is to notice as many birds, bugs, and any other animals as you can. Anything that walks, crawls, swims, or flies is of interest, and you will need to focus all of your senses to find them, especially the little ones.
BLOWING BUBBLES
Blowing bubbles is a fun activity to teach about deep breathing.
- Focus on taking in a big breath, and exhaling steadily to fill the bubble.
- Pay close attention to the bubbles as they form and float away.
BLINDFOLDED TASTE TESTS
Blindfolding allows you to use your other senses while trying food.
- Use a blindfold and experience eating a small food, like a raisin or a cranberry, as if it was your first time eating it.
BODY SCAN
A body scan is an activity that gets you to be more aware of different parts of your body.
- Lie down on your back on a comfortable surface and close your eyes.
- Squeeze every muscle in your body as tight as you can.
- Squish your toes and feet and squeeze your hands into fists.
- After a few seconds, release all your muscles and relax for a few minutes.
- Think about how your body is feeling throughout the activity.
HEARTBEAT
By bringing attention to their heartbeat, you will develop a sharper focus.
- Jump up and down in place or do jumping jacks for one minute.
- When finished, sit down and put a hand over your heart.
- Close your eyes and pay attention only to your heartbeat and your breath.
