Using Meditation for a Growth Mindset
Mindset is a set of beliefs that we hold about ourselves. This mindset has remarkable effects on your journey, such as your perspectives towards situations. If you build the right mindset during your early years of self-development, then you can thrive in various situations. Therefore, we need to ensure that you cultivate a growth mindset as early as possible so that you can perform better in your life and have positive aspirations for your future.
You with a growth mindset will have the following qualities [1]:
- You embrace challenges and are willing to overcome hurdles
- You view mistakes as opportunities to improve
- You learn from feedback and are open to criticism
- You enjoy learning new things and acquiring new skills
- You are willing to put in the effort and will keep on trying until you succeed
- You are not afraid to ask for help and not afraid to fail
- You have better relationships with others and get inspired by them
In order to attain this type of mindset, you would need to learn to train your mind. Meditation is one of the best tools for you to foster this growth mindset. Meditation is so powerful that it will alter the way you perceive and react to situations. The reason is that a consistent meditation practice will change “the structure and function of the brain by reshaping the neural pathways and connections in the brain associated with the cognitive abilities, such as attention, problem solving, planning, and introspection” [2]. As a result of meditation, this will help you to understand your own mind and to positively transform your thoughts. Meditation also creates an open mind for you to learn new self-beliefs, as well as to effectively eliminate the internal language (e.g. thoughts) that are not beneficial to the journey. You will then have robust cognitive skills and self-growth to focus on so that you can fulfill your life’s purposes.
To build this growth mindset for yourself and others, here are several strategies to implement at home or anywhere:
- Praise others for their efforts (rather than intelligence) when they succeed.
- Emphasize the value of learning new knowledge and skills.
- Demonstrate that failure is a learning tool for one's growth.
- Model a growth mindset regularly so that others can absorb it too!
