Ways to Find the Right Mindfulness Mentor
You are facing your own level of anxiety day to day, due to fast-paced schedules, work/academic pressures and less time spent in the outdoors. By incorporating meditation into your life at an early age, you will have the right tools to deal with these challenging situations in a compassionate way.
A mentor in meditation would be very beneficial to have in your life. This mentor would be a trusted individual that is keen to share their own mindful knowledge and experiences, and is genuinely invested in building the right foundation for a mindful life for you. This mentor would introduce the meditation techniques so that you are better prepared to pacify the daily stress of life.
The question now arises: how do we find the best meditation mentor for you? Consider these tips to find these mentors.
- Determine what is needed in the mentor role for you: In today’s society, a meditation mentor can have multiple definitions and responsibilities. However, it is important to determine what kind of mentor is needed for your needs. To begin this process, ponder on why it is beneficial to have a mindfulness mentor for yourself. Then, brainstorm ideas for what you want in this relationship with the mentor: ask yourself if you want a mentor who can guide you through breathing activities, or teach you how to express your gratitude properly. Or, you may indicate that you hope for someone who can be their motivator or a good listener. Be open to your own ideas so that you feel that they all are strongly considered.
- Evaluate the list of possible mentors: The next step is to ask yourself if there is a mindfulness mentor that you feel comfortable working with. If you do not have any preferences, then seek referrals within the network. Once a list of possible mentors has been gathered, consider these factors to narrow the list:
- Does the mentor have a structured meditation program for the session or is it a free-flow style?
- Does the mentor have a strong meditation practice and model key mindful traits in their life?
- What are the shared common values (e.g. compassion, honesty) between the mentor and yourself?
- Does the mentor have a track record of being a professional and excellent individual?
- Is the mentor ready to be committed and supportive of your meditation development?
Once the list has been narrowed to the top 3 mentors, meet them. Observe how the mentor interacts with you. Then, make the final selection consulting others if needed.
- Evaluate the mentor: Once the mentor has been selected, he/she will start their meditation training with you. After each session, take the time to think about your thoughts and feelings on your interaction with the mentor. Do you truly feel comfortable with the mentor? Do you understand the mindfulness concepts? Are the mindful practices effective for you? If you say no to any of these questions, then another mentor may need to be considered. And this is ok, as it may take time to find the best mentor for you. Once found, you will reap the incredible benefits of meditation in your life.
With the help of a mentor in meditation, you will have the right tools and strategies to effectively deal with every facet of life.
